Three Astronomers from China succeeded with their project to use the internet as their medium of communication as they study astronomical observations from remote sites. Two sites were at opposite ends of China, Kunming in the extreme west, close to the Himalayas, and Beijing, in the east. The third site was in Gainesville, Florida at the University of Florida Department of Astronomy. The Astronomers are Kaifan Ji, in Kunming, Bin-Xun Ye, in Beijing, and Yi Chu, in Gainesville.
Here is the image that Dr. Ji, Professor Ye, and Professor Chu were working on in December, 1995. They used a special technique to get a picture of Mars and its satellite that required different exposures due to the difference in brightness of the objects.
This picture is the first of the live images transmitted and discussed March 6, 1997, using the medium of the IRC. The telescope was aimed at Mars, actually in the early morning hours, on March 7, 1997, since the site in China is 13 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, and is across the international date line.
