Photographs Featuring Dr. Ji and Others

Kaifan Ji, Ph.D.

Dr. Ji is an astronomer at the Yunnan Astronomical Observatory in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. This picture was taken at about the time he received his doctoral degree. His dissertation examined the correlation between astronomical alignment of planets in the solar system, e.g., tidal effects, and the "El Nino" phenomenon.

Dr. Ji's Parents

This fine couple lives in the far northeastern part of China, in Sinkiang Province. Dr. Ji took this photo of his parents when they came to Kunming for a visit in the Spring of 1998, as I recall.

Getting the straight of it

Here's an interesting picture of Dr. Ji's wife, Shu Ping Ma, taken when she was traveling in Italy. She is an architect, and appears to have been studying the the classical form of the Leaning Tower of Pisa!

Another travel picture

In this more recent photo, we see a smiling Kaifan as he was checking out another landmark.

At the beach in New Hampshire, USA

Here we have a nice shot of Ji Kaifan and Ma Shuping, taken in 2001, during their stay in the USA. They were at Hampton Beach, a nice spot on the Atlantic Ocean (brrr! -cold water!) near the border of Massachussetts and Rhode Island, not far from Boston. Don't they look like a very happy couple?

Dr. Ji and his colleague, Qian Song

Qian Song, on the left, and Kaifan Ji are seen here while enjoying a meal at at a Japanese restaurant in Osaka, Japan, in 1997. They were in Japan to attend an international Astronomy conference. Qian is currently completing his Ph.D. dissertation at Beijing University, alternating with the occasional month back in the Yunnan Astronomical Observatory CCD Laboratory in Kunming, China. During the RPO experiment, using the chatnet username of "laomi," Qian was the interpreter between me and Miss Li, the local television station reporter who provided some live nationwide (in China) coverage of the historic event.

After Kaifan Ji came to the USA for a post-graduate assignment, I took him on a visit through a number of scenic National Parks near where I lived in Southern Utah. At the Grand Canyon, we found some of the sights that might be of particular interest to our friend Qian Song, otherwise known as "laomi."
